Prologue and Chapter 1

A Novel by Tina Matlock
________

Guava and Cheese
is a delicately crafted, heartfelt tale that enlivens Cuban history and culture with innocence and human spirit.

Like the tasty Cuban snack, Guava and Cheese recalls sweet memories of childhood set in a time of salty reality.

"Cuba si, Yankee no.” The rhythmic chant foretold Lina’s separation from her homeland.

”ˇViva Fidel! ˇViva la revolucion!”  The ceremonial shouts signaled her sacrifices.

Lina and her friends, Emilio and Angela, sense the uneasiness brought about by Castro’s reforms. Fearing separation, they make ritual vows to be friends forever.

But soon, the children are separated—their families’ loyalties, lives, and characters transformed by the tumultuous events.  Lina is sent to Tennessee. Emilio goes to a children’s home in Miami. Angela joins the Association of Rebel Youth. In spite of adversity, Lina’s mission is to reunite with her friends.
